Q1.4 This is an essay of no less than 200 words.
Explain the origin of English as an Indo-European language
The majority of the languages spoken in western Asia and Europe, from England to India, are connected to each other since English is a member of the Indo-European language family. The ancestral language, known as Proto-Indo-European, was spoken by nomads who are thought to have wandered the southwest European plains some 5000 years ago.
German, although being closely linked to English, continues to be more traditional than English in its retention of a complex inflection system.
Consequently, we may discover how Indo-European languages like English came to be. However, English is a west Germanic language that was brought to Britain by Anglo-Saxon immigrants from what is now northwest Germany, southern Denmark, and the Netherlands between the middle of the fifth and the seventh century AD.
According to facts, English belongs to the Indo-European family of languages and is therefore related to most other languages spoken in Europe and western Asia from England to India. Nomads believed to have roamed the southwest European plains spoke the parent tongue, called Proto-Indo-European, about 5000 years ago.
Though closely related to English, German remains for more conservative than English in its retention of an elaborate system of inflections .So, we can learn the origin of English as an Indo-European language. However, English is a west Germanic language that originated from Anglo-Frisian languages brought to the Britain in the mid-5th to 7th centuries AD by Anglo-Saxon migrants from what is now northwest Germany, southern Denmark and the Netherlands. English is a part of the Indo-European family of languages, which most linguists feel first, emerged about 800 years ago in an area just north of the Black Sea.
Linguistic evidence suggests that the first Indo-Europeans lived in an area that was not near water, but in the forest. They raised domestic animals including sheep, the cow and the horse. This was the time when the only metal they used was copper.
In conclusion, the origin of English is a long history and there are several options to learn about English language. One of these methods is learning it as an Indo-European language.
