Section B
Describe how children acquire their mother tongue.
As human beings, we have a unique ability of communication which has, as opposed to those developed by other species. It allows us to plan, think and communicate complex and intricate thoughts to one another. Considering the complexities involved it is a remarkable achievement to acquire a language from zero with no previous knowledge of any language system, something done as a matter of course by every normal infant. Within a short period of time all children become fully coherent members of the society in which they live, a process which can take second language learners many years to achieve.
In learning or acquiring as many linguists prefer to say, their native language, children must initially assimilate the rules of the language, not simply produce a repetition of what has been heard. The basic rules are acquired the ability to generate grammatically acceptable sentences is mastered.
Firstly, a baby begins to describe his reaction with sounds. The sounds are to express comfort or discomfort. Mother can easily differentiate the meanings of sounds behind the various types of crying and respond accordingly. Interestingly, the primary sounds are connected with the lip movements of sucking and produce /m/ or /n/.
Basically, parents or guardians have an important role on how many languages a child can possibly acquire. Naturally, if both parents speak same language, a child can speak the same and only one language, but if parents speak different languages, child will adopt and acquire two or more languages, becoming a bilingual or multilingual speaker. This can be the basic and plain explanation on how children acquired their mother tongues, however, scientifically speaking, there are theories which are supported by some arguments and facts that can give a clearer picture on this topic. Most of them defined language acquisition as a meant process which we are capable to fluently speak and understand a particular language or let’s say our mother tongue. The ability to understand the language is somehow related to genetic predisposition, but what the children speak is influenced by the culture and environment they are in.
This natural-based principle of language makes sense of what’s possible and what’s not, and this applies to all human being. Everything comes in time, as for the stages of acquiring a language. As for children from the very young age, it goes easier and quicker as shown in the timeline.
Pre-talking stage/Cooing (0-6 months) – prevalently called the ‘the noiseless stage’. Essentially, babies are new-borns, and they communicate as it were utilizing cry or cooing, some of the time they do a few expressions to by one means or another tell something almost what they require. At this arrange they can really get it basic signals and sound extraordinarily from mother. They can recognize the voice of her mother because it is the voice he listened indeed when he was still in his mother’s womb.
Babbling or early generation (6-8 months)- in this arrange babies begin to deliver sound; in some cases, they can begin to articulate the word baba, mamma or boo. But most of the time, babies are chattering as a way of playing their vocal strings, because it could be an unused revelation for them and impulses like repeating it and make more sound. With respects to this, there's a study that all babies no matter what the dialects their parents are utilizing, the primary sound they express are all labial consonants or vowel sound made with the lips, more than the other consonants.
Holophrastic Stage (9-18 months) – Holophrastic comes from the Latin words ‘holo’ means whole and ‘phrastikos’ for phrase that means to express or sort of a sentence. In this period, children start to utter a word which represent to a sentence. The sound that started from babbling is much clearer and more vocabularies are being said or expressed.
The two-word Stage or beginning fluency (18-24 months)- a child can now make a simple sentence with more than one word. However, the grammar rules are not correctly applied, for example, a child can say ‘Me get’ instead of ‘I will get’, ‘Chicken eat’ instead of ‘I want to eat chicken’. Also, at this age, a child is already able to make consonant sounds such as [b], [d], [j], [m], [n], [p] and [t].
Telegraphic stage or early multiword/intermediate fluency stage (24-30 months)- Now, a child is able to use a range or words that connects together with a more semantic relation. The vocabularies also expand from 50 words up to 13,000 words. Errors are less and can make a grammatically correct phrases and sentences.
Later multiword or advanced fluency (30+ months)- Children are now able to demonstrate higher thinking skills, the child is communicating clearly and fully understood.
To sum up, it appears that to acquire language the child must pass through various stages, not proceeding to the next stage until the previous stage is “learned”. There is no chance to go back and learn in the same way for children. If we understand first language acquisition it will help us to educate our children more effectively and teach L2 learners with the best methods of using the natural abilities that they already possess.
