PRONOUN

a word that is considered equivalent to the replaced object.

  • PURPOSE
  • to avoid repeated use objects reuse in one sentence

Types Of Pronoun

They are used as substitutes for a noun or

pronoun in a sentence.

Pronoun use as a Subject

  • As Main Sentence
  • Ex : He failed in his examination

    When he comes back from vacation, Nia and I plan .to look for another.

  • Used after To Be (am, is, are, was, were)
  • Ex : it is I that she loves. (not “me”)

In Question Tag

  • In Question Tag
  • Ex : the students mustn’t tell lies, must they?

    I have already done my duties, haven’t I?

  • After “than”
  • Ex : Dewi is much more beautiful than I.

    I am two years younger than she.

Pronoun use as a Object

  • As the object of the noun
  • Ex :

    I have seen them together several times.

  • Used after preposition
  • Ex : william threw stones at them

  • Used after “let”
  • Ex : let us go now (not “we”)

Reflexive Pronoun

Interpreted as a pronoun self, because it seems a reflection of the principal sentence.

For ending :

-self (for singular noun)

-selves (for plural noun)

Note : Reflexive Pronoun used as the object of a verb, therefore, Reflexive Pronoun usually placed after the verb

Demonstrative Pronoun

They demonstrate (or indicate).

Include in Demonstrative Pronoun is this,

that, these, those, one, ones, and such.

Ex :

This / that is my book

Those ones are yours

  • this / these and that / those + noun = demonstrative adjective
  • this / these and that / those w/o noun = demonstrative Pronoun
  • Ex :

    This book of mine is langer than that of yours

Indefinite Pronoun

This pronoun does not have a particula antecedent (the word or phrase that precedes)

which include indefinite pronouns are all,

any, anybody, anyone, anything,

everybody, everyone, everything, most,

nobody, no one(none), nothing, one,

somebody, someone, something.

The most important of the pronoun is that

almost most always followed by a singular

verb.

(except : all, any, most, none, and some)

Interrogative Pronoun used to ask a

question.

  • Who (used to ask people as main sentence)
  • Ex : who is that boy?

  • Whom (used to ask people as Object/complemet)
  • Ex : for whom does she make the dress?

  • Whose (used to asks ownership)
  • Ex : whose bag is that?

What (used to ask someone’s name, thing, job, etc)

  • What (used to ask someone’s name, thing, job, etc)
  • Ex :

    What is your name?

    What is he?

  • Which ( used to ask an option)
  • Ex : which do you prefer, mango or durian?

Relative (Conjunctive) Pronoun

It is called a "relative" pronoun because it "relates" to the word that its relative clause modifies. 

Ex : The person who phoned me last night is my teacher.

Which include in relative pronoun are who, whom, whose, which, that.

Who (subject) and Whom (object) are generally only for people. 

  • Who (subject) and Whom (object) are generally only for people. 
  • Whose is for possession. 
  • Which is for things. 
  • That can be used for things and people only indefining relative clauses (clauses that are essential to the sentence and do not simply add extra information)
