Teaching English pronunciation is a challenging task, with different goals at each level. This guide on how to teach pronunciation provides a brief overview of the main problems to be solved at each level and points out the resources in this article, such as lesson plans and activities, that can improve English pronunciation skills. After each level, there are some suggestions for level-appropriate activities.

Voicing


Voiced sounds will make the throat vibrate. For example, /g/ is a voiced sound while /k/ is not, even though the mouth is in the same position for both sounds. Have your students touch their throats while pronouncing voiced and voiceless sounds. They should feel vibration with the voiced sounds only.

Intonation

The intonation of a word or sentence can be imitated with kazoo or humming. This will distract students from the meaning of the word or sentence and help them focus on intonation

Linking


We pronounce phrases or even complete sentences as a soft voice rather than a series of individual words. "Amy will disappear" will be translated as "Wilaymeegowaway". To help student’s link words, try to start from the end of the sentence and ask him to repeat a phrase and add more sentences when he is proficient. For example, "go away", then "aymeegowaway", and finally "Wilaymeegowaway", with no pauses between words.

Syllables

Ask students to count the syllables in a word and hold up the correct index finger, or place objects on the table to represent each syllable. Illustrates syllable stress by clapping the syllables of the corresponding words softly and loudly. For example, the word "beautiful" would be "bloss-soft-soft". Practice using a short list of words with the same syllable stress pattern ("beautiful," "phone," "Florida"), and then see if your students can number other words with that pattern.
