The internet seems to be an integral part of many people’s lifestyle because of its various benefits. In some cases, it is suggested that internet access be completely free of charge for everyone, whereas other school of thought opposes. While both arguments are valid, I tend to think that free internet access can be flawed.

Clearly, advocates of free internet access have reasonable arguments. To begin with, many people in the poverty line can reap the benefit of surfing the internet, which might promote equilibrium in the society. In the short term, this can encourage those financially weak individuals to feel their role in the community, thus becoming motivated. Additionally, students, who might find paying for the internet rather costly, might improve their academic performance, should this proposal be implemented. This is because, the Internet offers countless studying tools which can come in handy for self-studying.

That being said, sceptics, myself included, hold that the suggestion tends to be rather absurd. Firstly, so addictive is the Internet that it can deter people from other beneficial activities, such as engaging in sports, taking up hobbies or reading books. This free access, on the contrary, is apt to exacerbate this already appealing situation. Ultimately, it appears to trigger people to lead sedentary lifestyle more, which may bring about cardiovascular diseases or diabetes. Furthermore, there is a question that who shoulders this financial burden. If this handout is incumbent on the government, then, this can harm the budget.

To conclude, making the internet free for everyone might be advantageous to some extent. However, the potential drawbacks tend to be ‘catastrophically’ problematic, so I disapprove of this suggestion.
