Type: University. It was founded in 1968 and there are at present seven Faculties (Science, Political Sciences, Business, Law, Letters and Philosophy and Medicine. There are also 7 University Schools (Escuela Universitaria) with two study-centers.

Experience: Socrates/Erasmus. The Autonomous University of Madrid has a mid-size, compared to other Universities in Spain and has been motivated, since its foundation, to be part of an international environment; it is already partner in many exchange projects both for students and academics as well for non-academic staff. The History Departments have participated in the ECTS Pilot Project and subsequent projects including CLIOH PROG. It has presented a proposal on behalf of CLIOHNET for an IP on Citizenship to be held in 2004.

Type: The University Carlos III de Madrid is a public university under the jurisdiction of the Spanish Government. It was founded in 1989;

Size: a. 910 university lectures, 321 members of the administrative staff, b. 13000 students;

Expertise: The Carlos III University of Madrid has 3 centres:

The Faculty of Social Sciences and Law on the Campuses of Getafe and Colmenajero.

The Faculty of Humanities, Documentation and Communication on the campus of Getafe.

The Higher Technical School on the Campus of Leganés.

All courses, including the compulsory material, include optional subjects which enable the students to receive specialised multipurpose training that will match their interests and intellectual inclinations.

The humanities are present in the training of all students. Regardless of the degree they undertake, all of them are obliged to complete six humanities credits from a wide range of subjects: art, cinema, history, geography, language, literature, music, technology and humanities.

Familiarity with a foreign language, generally English but also German, French or Italian, is included in all curricula. In the Business Administration and Management Degree and Economics Degree, compulsory courses are offered in English.

Experience: The University Carlos III de Madrid was born with an international vocation. Our principal aims have been the co-operation with European Union countries, through the Socrates Programme, especially the Erasmus Programme for higher education and Thematic Networks. We also take part in other European Programmes such as Leonardo da Vinci, Tempus and Alfa. On the other hand, the University has promoted links with Latin-American universities and institutions through the bilateral co-operation in the fields of education and research. Our University develops an active participation in the programmes of the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and we receive students and lecturers not only from Latin-American countries, but also from Asia, Central and Eastern Europe and Asia. Our institution has also established bilateral agreements with some universities from the USA and we hope to increase these relations with institutions from Australia and China.

The international vocation of the University reaches also the research field through the OTRI (Research Outcomes Transfer Office). Our Departments have taken part in different research projects from different programmes. Its participation role has been not only as research member of consortiums but also as co-ordinator of projects. In this respect the University has been co-ordinator of research projects of different programmes from III an IV Framework Programme and of Scientific Networks as Brite-Euram. The experience reached through these actions gives University Carlos III enough capacity to manage research projects from both sides: scientific and administrative management.

Expertise: Studies in History began as a degree course (including the Bachelor's Degree) in the Study Plan of the University of Salamanca during the academic year 1963-64, within the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities. In 1978-79 a new Faculty of Geography and History was created, including degrees in History, Geography and Art History; in 1989-90 the new discipline of Musicology was included, and 1994-95 saw the implementation of a new Degree, Humanities.

Experience: The Area of History of the Faculty of Geography and History has a wide experience and a valuable quality in international and European programmes, as proved by:

This area took part in the ECTS Pilot Project from its start.

Wide experience of the Teaching Staff as former PIC's coordinators.

High number of students involved in the European Programmes since their beginnings (140 Socrates-Erasmus students during the academic year 2000/2001).

The University of Salamanca participates in a high number of cooperation projects at local, national and transnational levels, within which the most recent is "Tuning Educational Systems in Europe".

Expertise: Since1499, the University of Valencia initially dedicated to the study of medicine, humanities, theology and law has become a modern European university today. Our University is opened to almost every branch of teaching, research and culture.

The University of Valencia is one of the largest, oldest and most varied of the Spanish Universities.

This 3.159 teaching staff are integrated into 17 faculties, 90 departments and 14 research institutes of the social, health, human, experimental and basic sciences areas.
The University has three campuses of Knowledge and Scientific Areas, where 59 graduate degrees and 362 post-graduate (master and doctoral) degrees are taught. BLASCO IBÁÑEZ: Health Sciences; Humanities; Education.

Expertise: The University of Sorbonne is particularly devoted to the teaching of Humanities, Philosophy, Sciences, History, Geography, Archaeology, Music, Sciences of communication and information. This University is specialised in the teaching of History. In History, teaching on all levels, from first cycle to post-doctoral. Research centres : Centre Roland Mousnier - Histoire et civilisations ; Centre de recherches en Histoire du XIXème siècle ; Centre d'Histoire de l'Islam contemporain ; Centre de recherches en Histoire de l'Innovation (CRHI) ; Centre d'histoire de l’Europe et des Relations internationales (CHERI) ; Centre d'études et de recherches sur l'Allemagne et l’espace danubien contemporain (CERAEDC) ; 

Experience: The History area has advanced experience in trans-national exchanges and cooperation; bilateral SOCRATES links with about 30 European Universities; many of which are also partners in CLIOHNET.

Experience: The University of Poitiers has a long tradition with international relationships. The main transnational contacts are with: Europe, Amérique Latine, Afrique, Moyen-Orient, Asie et dans une moindre mesure, Amérique du Nord et Australie. The University of Poitiers belongs to the group of Coimbra which connects the most ancient universities of Europe.

Experience: Founded in 1966 the University is involved in some trans-national projects as: in Leonardo (sangria): European project; Intereg II – Rive Manche. It is also involved in the research field through its 3 Centers: Engineering, Bio-Chemical and of Humanities., as the research-field is one of the most important aim for the University of Rouen.

Expertise: The institution participated in the original ECTS pilot programme in the field of history and has subsequently extended ECTS to all other subjects. The institution's policy of internationalisation also embraces the United States and the Far and Middle East;

Experience: University of Cork has been actively involved in the field of international education for a number of years. The institution has been active in ERASMUS since its inception. Under SOCRATES it has links with partner institutions in virtually all of the countries of the European Union, and also in associated countries.

Type: University;

Size: a. 396 teaching staff, 365 administrative staff, b. 14.000 students ;

Expertise: Medieval and Modern History, particularly in the areas of Irish, British, German and American history;

Experience: The department participates in three Erasmus ICP programmes, and in similar exchange schemes with Universities in the USA. It is a founder member of the North European History Research Network and of its Common Doctoral Programme. It is also the lead department of the Centre for the Study of Human Settlement and Historical Change established by the University following the award in July 2000 of a grant of 3.5 million Euros from the Government of Ireland. Individual members of the department also have teaching and research links with members of other History Departments in European and American Universities, participating in Socrates Intensive Programmes and as Visiting Professors in DAAD-sponsored programmes.

Expertise: An almost unique feature of the Subject area 'History' at the University of Bologna is without any doubt the extreme variety of scientific interests and the wide choice of courses in History that can be found in several Faculties. The scientific research in history is organized among several departments: Department of Ancient History, of Medieval History and Palaeography, Department of Historical Science and Department of Politics, Institution and History (for a total of more than 140 researchers and teaching staff), moreover many historians carry out their researches in other Departments: like the Department of Linguistic and Oriental studies, the department of Histories and methodologies for the preservation of cultural Heritage and many others Departments. In the framework of the scientific research historians work in close cooperation with philologists, archaeologists, specialists in the filed of social sciences, religion studies, law, economics, geography, information and communication technologies, both in interdepartmental equipes and interdepartmental centres. The fields of scientific research and scientific international cooperation are highly differentiated, ranging from local history to extra-European history and it would be impossible to mention them all. As a consequence there is a wide offer of courses in several faculties. There is also a specific Degree Course in History in the Faculty of Letters leading to a final "Laurea"-Degree in History, with specialization respectively in Ancient, Medieval, Modern, Contemporary and Oriental History, with currently more than 600 students. Courses of studies with a more general profile, like Letters and Political Science have a special historical curriculum. All the students of the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy have some history courses in their curriculum and the same happens to students of other faculties: Cultural Heritage studies, Education Economics, Law, Foreign Languages and Literature, Political Sciences. The University of Bologna, in cooperation with other Italian and foreign Universities offers a wide choice of post-graduate courses in History as well. The postgraduate doctorate curricula range from Ancient History to Medieval History to more specialized curricula like "Society, Kingship and Priesthood in the philological and anthropological methodologies (V-VI cent. A.D.)", "History of Europe: Identities, citizenship and territory in the modern and contemporary age", diachronical themes like "Religious studies: historical and social sciences for the study of religions", or methodological aspects like the doctorate curriculum in "History and Computing";

Experience: The European international cooperation in the framework of the ERASMUS - SOCRATES programmes counts more than 40 bilateral agreement in the subject area and each year between 30 and 40 History students follow courses in a foreign University or come to Bologna from a partner Institution to follow courses in History. The University of Bologna participated in the ECTS pilot scheme for the History subject area and cooperated with the network of the former ECTS pilot scheme partners in the Curriculum development project "History of the Idea and Reality of Europe". In this framework the University of Bologna organized in May 1998 an Intensive programme: "The European Culture and the Environment". From the year 1999/2000 the University of Bologna participates in the SOCRATES programme "CLIOH: Creating links and overviews for a new History agenda" coordinated by the University of Pisa. For the field of Ancient History the University of Bologna participated in the SOCRATES ODL programme with the Project Telemaco/Telemachos in the years 1998-2000 (contract N. 56626 CP-2-1999-ODL-ODL), the project has been devoted to Innovative teaching methods and to ODL ion the field of Ancient history and Classics.The faculty of Political Science is very active in the cooperation with the emerging eastern European partners in the Balcan Network.

Experience: University of Milan has a long experience in the field of EU Education Programmes, such as SOCRATES, TEMPUS, LEONARDO, ALFA, EU-CANADA, JEAN MONNET and SCHUMAN Programmes.

Within the SOCRATES/ERASMUS Programme, University of Milan organises mobility of about 420 outgoing students and 230 incoming students per year.

Type: University, with degree courses in almost all Socrates areas including Teacher training

Size: 1909 administrative personnel, 2197 professors; 60023 studentsExpertise: An ancient, prestigious university with long-standing contacts with most European countries

Experience: in Socrates-Erasmus programmes (active in Humanitarian studies), Leonardo, Campus, Comenius, Tempus, Jean Monnet, Framework Programes, Coimbra Group, Time Project,several Thematic Networks and Alpha programmes; in addition to the European dimension, the University of Padua has links with Boston, California, Melbourne and Osaka, among others. This Institution represents Italy in the History Subject Area Group of the Tuning Project.

Participating Institution nr 27 Provincial Aministration of Lucca

Type of Institution, main areas and types of activity: The Province of Lucca is a local institution placed on an intermediate level between the Region and the local borough. It promotes and coordinates the economical, cultural, tourist and sport development of its community. The Province has administrative functions in different fields concerning its territory, such as: environmental matters, roads practicability, cultural heritage valorization, maintenance of high school buildings and professional courses for employees and people out of work.

It administrates by collaborating with all the boroughs of its territory and it can also deal with matters whjch are delegated to it from the Region or the National Government.



Expertise: cultural services. It organizes and collaborates at local, regional, national and trans-national projects concerning exposition, meetings and conventions held in Lucca. e.g: an exposition of Elisa Bonaparte household objects was held in January 2004. The objects had been borrowed from national and international museums.
Participating Institution nr. 28. University of Rome La Sapienza
Type: The University of Rome La Sapienza was founded on 20th April 1303 when pope Bonifacio VIII emanated a note that instituted in Rome a “Studium generale” in order to carry out studies in “in quarumlibet scientiae facultatum”. Since than the University is one of the most important academic centres of Italy and of Europe. Today the university presents a multicultural profile with Professors and students coming from all over the world.

The multicultural approach of the university is well represented by the Department n. 71 of “La Sapienza”, CISUECO ( Centre of studies about central and eastern Europe countries). CISUECO was founded in 1989 in order to constitute a bridge between western and eastern cultural institutions of Europe. Since its birth the Centre promoted researches, conferences and meetings that constituted essential opportunity for a dialogue and an exchange of views between scholars coming form eastern and western European countries.

CISUECO promotes the university course of “Cooperation, development and relations between people” and PHD courses in “History of Europe”. The aim of this programs is to form young researchers and young professionals who have a good preparation in history, political science, international relation and with a good knowledge of languages (in this context CISUECO pays particular attention to the languages of the eastern European countries).

Experience: The University is developing a policy of openness and internationalisation that is reflected in the numerous agreements with different universities of high reputation in Europe and on other continents. In this sense, the University approached almost all European programmes for education and/or research.

CISUECO has established agreements with the following universities of eastern European countries: University of Budapest (Hungary), University of Szeged (Hungary), University of Cluj-Napoca (Romania), University Neofit Rilsky (Bulgaria), Academy of Sciences of Cracovia (Poland), University of Rzeszow (Poland), University of Biškek (Kyrgyzstan) and University of Stony Brooke, NY (USA). By these agreements CISUECO tries to increase relations between scholars of eastern and western European countries.



Participating Institution nr. 29. University of Rome III
Type: The University of Roma Tre is a learning institution that supports the creation of a European dimension within the university system not limited to exchange of students and teachers, but including more ambitious attempt, as the creation of European curricula, degrees, etc., in the main areas and types of its activity: research and teaching (all degrees) in humanities, social and political science, law, economy, engineering, natural and medical science. The University is an integrated part of national and local culture policy and interact with scholars and public opinion through congresses and conferences, publications, open courses and qualified partnerships. The University of Roma Tre has made the choice of an evaluation system of its efficacy and efficiency monitored by the Conference of the European Rectors;

Expertise: In the University of Roma Tre there are Faculties of Humanities, Political Science, Economics, Law and Pedagogy that support many historical disciplines. In particular, the University has a Department of History, acting in deep inter-disciplinary cooperation with Geography and Anthropology where research programs are in progress in the fields of medieval, modern and contemporary history, cultural studies, Islamic history and civilization, history of the Americas, European and Mediterranean history, history of science, economic and social history, international relations. Since October 2001 this Department will support a new degree in “History and International Cooperation”, with innovative curricula as “History and Communication”, “History and Ethnicity”, “Civilization and Religions”, “International Cooperation on Culture Policy”. Last year the Department of History has established a new “Research Centre on the Formation of Europe and the New International Order”. The modern history staff is partner in a national research program “Italy and Spain in the XVIth and XVIIth Europe”. The geography staff is partner in a national research program “Regionalism and trans-nationality in contemporary Europe”.

Experience: The Department has subscribed bilateral Agreements with European Universities or learning institutions to achieve specific aims, in particular with the Universidad Complutense of Madrid and the Ecole de Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales of Paris. The University of Roma Tre is partner of the University of Mediterranean, an official institution that has its head office in Rome and gathers many Mediterranean (European and Arabian) countries. The University has also a wide experience with reference to Socrates, Erasmus, Leonardo, Tempus and Alpha Programs of the European Union and participates to the Thyrrenum Consortium for the Sustainable Development. The University cooperates with the Municipality of Rome to enhance cultural life and initiatives in the town and is working to an Agreement with the Region in the framework of the European Social Fund objectives.
