SEVIS by the Numbers 
SEVIS by the Numbers is an annual report that highlights key SEVIS data. The data 
illustrates trends, values and information specifically on F and M international students 
studying in the United States. The report includes the following sections:

Data on international students who come to the United States to study.

Data on SEVP-certified schools that enroll international students in the 
United States.

Data about international student demographics within 
individual U.S. states and territories. 
This SEVIS by the Numbers report uses SEVIS data from calendar year 2021 and compares 
it to data from calendar year 2020. This report can also be compared to calendar year data 
in the 
SEVP Data Library on ICE.gov
 as well as the 
2020 SEVIS by the Numbers report
. 
PLEASE NOTE: An international student or exchange visitor is deemed active once they 
enter the United States and engage in their program of study or exchange visitor program. 
COVID-19 Impact 
The COVID-19 pandemic continued to impact international student enrollment in the 
United States in 2021. The total number of SEVIS records for active F-1 and M-1 students 
was 1,236,748 in calendar year 2021, a decrease of 1.2 percent from calendar year 2020.

The number of international students enrolled at
kindergarten through grade 12 (K-
12) schools decreased 16 percent from 2020 to 2021 (-9,489). 
-
In 2019, more than three K-12 schools enrolled more than 700 international 
students, with one school hosting more than 1,000 international students. In 
comparison, in 2020, only one school hosted more than 700 international students. 
In 2021, no K-12 schools hosted more than 600 international students.

While all four regions in the United States saw a decline in international student 
records from 2019 to 2020, only the Western region saw a decline from 2020 to 
2021 of 7.5 percent. 
-
There were 105,970 pre- and post-completion optional practical training (OPT) 
students with both an employment authorization document (EAD) and who 
reported working for an employer in calendar year 2021, compared to 122,699 in 
calendar year 2020

a 13.6 percent decrease.
