PSYCHOLOGICAL PECULIARITIES OF TEACHING ENGLISH TO 
ADULT LEARNERS IN UKRAINE 
Abstract. The article examines the psychological peculiarities of teaching English to 
adult learners as a tool for optimizing the process of forming English speech competence 
of adults with A2 level of English proficiency. In order to localize difficulties in 
mastering speech material, the empirical training was carried out, in which civil 
servants of 1 year of study took part. The main types of adult learner perception were 
identified, as well as the most effective approaches to teaching instruction in groups of 
civil servants in the process of forming their English-speaking communicative 
consciousness in the system of continuous education. It has been found that the 
improvement of the educational process effectiveness is possible with the 
implementation of a specially developed system of tasks affecting the cognitive, 
motivational and personal spheres of the described group of learners. The analysis of 
the results made it possible to classify the types of adult recipients’ speech perception, 
which led the authors to identify the problems and difficulties that adult learners face in 
the process of mastering English. Conclusions are drawn about recommended new ways 
to overcome these challenges in the system of adult learners continuous education.
