THE USAGE OF STYLISTIC DEVICES IN PROVERBS OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE 
RELATED TO MOTHERLAND

Annotation. Proverbs are irreplaceable material for the study of the culture of the people. The 
figurative components of the proverbs of the Uzbek and English languages, despite a number of 
differences in the means of explication, contain much in common, which, apparently, is associated 
with the universal nature of the linguocultural dominant that they reflect. This article discusses the 
usage of stylistic devices in proverbs of English language related to motherland.

Introduction. Proverbs are independent genres, but despite this, they are characterized by a num-
ber of common genre features. These features can be divided into three groups: by content, by form, 
by function. The presence of common features can be explained by the fact that both proverbs and 
aphorisms refer to works of small genres, but despite this, the distinctive features of proverbs and 
aphorisms are quite significant. Proverbs can serve as a kind of tool for measuring cultural dominants 
in a language. Cultural and linguistic characteristics of proverbs and aphorisms are an important 
component of the culture of the people and reflect the specifics of the perception of the world. Prov-
erbs represent a significant layer of the linguistic culture of any nation. As K. D. Ushinsky noted, the 
proverb “ reflected all aspects of the life of the people: home, family, field, forest, social; their needs, 
habits, their views on nature, on people, on the meaning of all phenomena of life». Proverbs have 
been studied by many scientists and linguists, both domestic and foreign. Here are some definitions 
of the proverb that reveal its characteristic features:
- a short figurative finished utterance, usually rhythmic in form, with an edifying meaning [2];
- a short folk saying with edifying content, a folk aphorism [3];
- an apt figurative saying, usually rhythmic in form, generalizing, typifying various phenomena of 
life and having an edifying meaning [4];
- a short, well-known phrase, invented by the people, which contains wisdom, truth, morality and 
traditions in a metaphorical, fixed
and easy to remember form” [5];
- a figurative finished utterance that has an edifying meaning, usually characterized by a special 
rhythm-intonation and phonetic design (parallelism of construction, poetic size, sound repetitions, 
rhyme, etc.) [4].
In other words, all proverbs are characterized by brevity, aphorism, are generalizing, edifying and 
complete. They are characterized by metaphor, a special phonetic and rhythmic pattern, and are well 
remembered.
Methods
In our study, we paid attention to what stylistic techniques are used to achieve these features in 
English-language proverbs [2]. The paremiological fund of the English language covers almost all 
spheres of human life and activity. In order to identify the most common means of expression, we 
analyzed more than two hundred proverbs [9; 10], which can be attributed to the material side of hu-
man life.
