STUDIES ON LEPTOSPIROSIS IN CENTRAL ASIA REGION

In the previous decades on the territory of Cenral Asia Republics natural foci and cases of human and animal leptospi-
rosis were found and investigated (Glinenko V.M. et al., 1983; Jalilov K.D. et al., 1983; Tynalieva T.A. et al., 1983; Peregudov 
T.A. et al., 1983; Chernukha Yu.G., Ananyina Yu.V., 1970, 1983). For example a large epidemic outbreak of leptospirosis was 
registered in Tadgikistan (Lukyanov N.B. et al., 1990). Pair blood sera of 138 patients were investigated in microagglutination 
and passive hemagglutination tests. Antibodies to Moskva V strain were revealed (serogroup Grippotyphosa). Their titres in 
dynamics varied in the ranges 1:40 – 1:5120 and 1:200 – 1:3200 respectively. Leptospirosis among humans and live-stock was 
registered in Turkmenia since 1969, while data on the epizootics among wild rodents are absent. In 1987-1989 search for the 
infection was carried out in the most irrigated region of the desert. The leading signs attributed to the emergency and intensity 
of the epizootics were humidity of soil, aboundance of rodents – potential carriers and amount of grasers – possible sourses of

the agents. 810 blood serum specimen of rodents from humified biotops – Mus musculus and Meriones tamarscinus were 
studied and analised in four parts of the region differing in the mentioned above characteristics. Only in autumn of 1989 a slack 
episootics of leptospirosis Grippotyphosa of M. musculus (9,3% of infected animals; titres 1:20 – 1:400) were found jn the most 
irrigated territory included the rice fields. Episootics was running despite low density of mice. No episootics were registrated in 
the other parts of the region where the density of mice and grasers were essentially larger but amount of fresh water was lower. 
2-3% of animals with antibodies (titres 1:20) to leptospires of serogroups Pomona, Sejroe, Icterohaemorrhagiae, Tarassovi, 
Grippotyphosa, Autumnalis, Cynopteri were found there (Bokshtein F.M. et al. 1990). Diversity of serogroups and low titres of 
antibodies testify to the supposition that contacts of mice with agents existed but they did not turn the former into carriers of the 
infections. Probability of emergence of episootics depends on combination of intensive irrigation with pastures of cattle. The 
strain Bairam-Ali (Leptospira biflexa) was isolated from irrigation channel water in Turkmenia in 1970. The slide antigen was 
prepared from this strain for using in one-point serodiagnosis of human leptospirosis – Bairam Ali slide agglutination test 
(BASA). BASA was simpliest and became very useful to perform a diagnosis in the early stages of leptospirosis and for screen-
ing epidemiological surveys of leptospirosis infection (Petrov E.M. et al., 1990). Bairam Ali is L. biflexa on the basis of phenotype 
properties (Ananyina Yu.V., 1983) and some genotype tests – DNA fingerprinting (Shaginyan I.A. et al., 1990, 1991) and PCR 
(Samsonova A.P. et al., 1994-2008). In last years DNA of this strain was studied in MLST and whole genomic sequencing 
(Voronina O.L. et al., 2015) and was found, that it some signs similar to pathogenic leptospires.
