The Board of Executive Directors of the World Bank allocated $50 million for the
implementation of the project “Modernization of the National Innovation System in Uzbekistan.”
Uzbekistan strives to introduce innovative ideas, products, processes and developments
into various spheres of life and sees them as the driving force of its economic growth. The
country aims to be among the top 50 countries in the world by 2030 in the Global Innovation
Index. These plans are important given the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the
country's population and economy.
Along with the market reforms launched several years ago, the government has also
begun
to
modernize
the
scientific
and
innovative
potential
of
the
country.
In September 2018, the Innovative Development Strategy for 2019-2021 was adopted. Its
objectives are to strengthen the scientific potential and effectiveness of research
and
development,
create
mechanisms
for
integrating
education,
science
and entrepreneurship for the wide introduction of the results of research, development and
technology (research), as well as increasing public and private sector investment
in innovation and research.
As a result, gross domestic spending on research is expected to quadruple, meaning
spending will rise from 0.2 percent of GDP in 2018 to 0.8 percent of GDP
in 2021.
