HOW TO CREATE A TITLE PAGE
Double-space your page. Do not use single-space.
Write the name of your institution
A third of the way beneath the name of your institution, write the title of your paper.
Towards the bottom of your paper, write your name, the course name and ID number, the instructor’s name, and the due date.
ESSAY FORMAT
An essay should be typed or word-processed on A4 paper, double-spaced, on the one side of the page only. Leave one-inch margin at the top and bottom of each page and on the left-hand and right side.
On every page except a separate title page, type the first word (or first two words) of your title, one-half inch from the top of the page, and type the page number on the next line.
WRITING AN ESSAY
The next page should be the table of contents, giving page numbers for each chapter, section and appendix. Sections and Subsections should be clearly distinguished, systematically enumerated and given descriptive titles.
Start each chapter on a new page. Chapter I should be a general introduction. Other chapters will constitute the body of your report. The final chapter should contain your conclusions.
Graphs and tables, with brief titles, should be numbered serially and inserted in the relevant pages of the report. But if they are very long they may be collected at the end of the dissertation. Sources, with dates, should be given at the bottom of each graph or table.
After you concluding chapter you should give a list of references you have used. The Bibliography should contain all other publications that have formed part of your reading, but which have not been referred to.
Finally you should present any appendices which should be referred to at the appropriate point in the report
QUOTATIONS AND REFERENCING
Short quotations should be highlighted with quotations marks at the start and end of quotation. The quotation should be referenced with the author, year and page number in brackets.
E.g. ‘there is little evidence of any substantial reorientation of the approach’ (Oakley 1991:38)
Long quotations should be intended and does not need quotation marks.
E.g. It is a striking indicator of the force of theses premises that Cairo shows few of the overt signs of abject poverty so frequently exhibited by the large, overcrowded cities of the world (Wikan 1990:20)
REFERENCES
The title of the book should be highlighted in some way, either bold, underlined or italic.
Information should be put in the following order:
Author last name, Initials, Date of Publishing, Title of book, place of Publisher: Publisher.
E.g. Robson C (1993) Real World Research Oxford: Blackwells.
Referencing a chapter in a book
Always cite the chapter and full details of the book:
Wikan U (1990) Changing Housing Strategies and Patterns Among the Cairo Poor, 1950-85 in Amis P & Lloyd p (eds.) Housing Africa’s Urban Poor Manchester: Manchester University Press.
Referencing a journal article:
Always cite the title of the article, journal name (the sama as a book), the volume and page numbers.
