5 credits, 80 hours

Aim of study subject –

To provide the analytic tools in order to understand and analysis the dynamic of the nowadays process of globalisation, dealing with its changes and challenges, phocusing on internacional economic relations and internacional political economy.




Tasks of study program –

The course objectives are to help the students to understand:



  1. The theoretical basis of the nowadays political economic system and the main theoretic approaches – liberalism, Keynesianism, institutionalism and their variations;

  2. The role of the State’s policies in the economic process, internally and in internationally;

  3. the main models of market based economies, which are present in almost all world’s countries;

  4. the economic crisis of socialism and its fall; the process of transition and its specificities (also in Latvia);

e) the determinants of the process of globalisation, its essence and expressions, as the movements of anti-globalism, its causes and objectives;


Content of study subject –

1. International Political Economy’s theoretical basis and its most relevant economic approaches.

2. The role of the State in the economy. The Political Economy of the intervention of the State on the economy and the process of economic regulation.

3. Economic systems: theory and practice.

4. The influence of Globalisation in the field of International Political Economy.

5. The division of countries in developed, developing and underdeveloped.

6. The role of the international multilateral organisations in the run of the economic process.

7. The characteristics of the development of the post-socialist (transition) countries.


Tests in study subject –

All students must to take part in the lessons, seminaries and the final exam, as to submit reports and presentations.
