Large irregular texture
Download a large size texture that is not tiled or seamless. This is 
one instance where using a large texture image is desirable; the larger the size, the better. A 
large texture is greater than 1,024 pixels in width and height.
The goal is to scale and position the large irregular texture to allow the variety of character 
to dominate the appearance of the surface (Fig. 9.41). In other words, use a texture that does 
not contain a repeating, notable pattern. One issue with this method is that any seams can be 
visible where the irregular texture repeats on the surface. This can be mitigated by following 
suggested adjustments as discussed next.

Seams and Irregular Textures 
Seams occur when the edges of an applied, irregular texture image meet and cause a noticeable 
or faint discrepancy to appear (Fig. 9.42). The most obvious way to fix this problem is to use 
seamless textures: the four edges of the image will match perfectly. When placed next to each 
other, there will be no seam. However, seamless textures can lead to moiré patterns (as noted 
previously).
When you make any adjustments to a seam, make sure to consider the camera view to be 
used for rendering (see Chapter 15). Using any of the following methods, you can hide the 
seam so it is not visible in a particular camera view.
