Moiré Patterns and Seamless Textures
A moiré pattern is a seemingly endless repeating pattern of the texture image on a surface 
(Fig. 9.36). Moiré patterns occur when you are using tiled or seamless textures. The larger the 
surface area, the more likely it is that a moiré pattern will become apparent because of the 
repeating tiles of the texture. Ground covers, lawns, asphalt, and concrete paving are common 
culprits (Fig. 9.37).

Moiré patterns caused by a seamless texture that is scaled too small are common when 
you’re first learning to apply textures (which is why scaling is the first thing you should do 
after applying a texture to a face). There are two approaches to dealing with moiré patterns. 
Each can cause other problems, warranting further adjustments, which are discussed later 
in this chapter. 
Scaling
Increase the overall scale of the texture until the pattern is less recognizable 
(Fig. 9.38, Fig. 9.39, Fig. 9.40). If this causes the texture to look too large or unrealistic, 
consider using an irregular texture as described next or try swapping out the texture.
