Things to Consider
Several important factors affect the way textures are displayed using the Projected option for 
organic surfaces. 
Surface Orientation 
The orientation of the flat surface with the texture that will be projected needs to be parallel to 
the irregular surface onto which it will be projected. 
If the irregular surface is (mostly) oriented along the horizontal plane of SketchUp (terrain, 
for example), then the surface with the projected texture must be oriented along the horizon-
tal plane. If the irregular surface is mostly vertical, then the projected surface must be vertical. 
The direction of vertical surfaces must be consistent as well. 
Select All Edges and Faces 
When applying the projected texture onto the irregular surface, all the edges and faces must 
be selected (Fig. 8.40). This includes all hidden edges, which will be present 100 percent of 
the time with any irregular surfaces (unless they are all visible). The best way to select all the 
faces and edges on these surfaces is to do a triple-click selection. However, because triple-click 
will also select all noncomponent or grouped geometry objects connected to the irregular 
surface, you should ensure that the irregular surface is its own group or component.
Nothing Is Perfect 
This method is not foolproof or perfect. The more an irregular surface curves away from the 
orientation of the projected flat texture surface, some distortion will appear on the edges of 
the irregular geometry. This is most common when trying to project a texture onto a sphere. 
Depending on the orientation of the projected texture, the sides of the sphere not aligned with 
the projected surface will still be distorted.
