Rendering in SketchUp

Computer Performance and Texture Views: When they are applied to model sur-
face, textures can effect computer and SketchUp performance. You can mitigate these 
effects using the SketchUp Tools Style menu, which controls how surfaces are displayed. 
Several different tools are used to edit texture. The remainder of this chapter focuses on 
how these tools work. Important functions and ones performed often are noted (look 
for the asterisk*) so you’ll know that mastering them is important. Here is a quick list 
and overview:

The Paint Bucket Tool: The main Texture tool used for applying, editing, scaling, 
adjusting color, inserting custom textures, and swapping textures.

Styles Menu: This menu controls the visibility of textures and the appearance of faces.

Right-click Texture Options: This context-sensitive tool is a finicky tool that rotates, 
repositions, and scales textures using the mouse.

External Photo Editing: The Paint Bucket menu can be linked to external photo-
editing software such as Photoshop. The physical appearance of a texture can be recon-
figured in programs like Photoshop and then updated in SketchUp. 
The paint Bucket Tool 
The Paint Bucket tool allows you to select a color or texture and apply it to a model face. The 
Paint Bucket tool is used for three primary tasks when modeling and rendering:

Replacing a solid color or texture with a downloaded texture image from your Texture 
Library

Scaling the texture image and resolution

Swapping out textures when you’re editing the model during the draft iterative process

The applicator
The Paint Bucket applicator is used to apply selected materials onto surfaces 
(Fig. 8.3). It automatically becomes active when the Paint Bucket tool is open. 
It can also be reactivated by pressing the B key on the keyboard.
