Rendering in SketchUp

1. 
Insert the desired vegetation image into the rendering in Photoshop. Hide the layer 
(Fig. 32.1, Fig. 32.2).
2. 
Select the areas in the render that will include the vegetation. Use Select 
F
Color Range 
for the quickest result.
3. 
Once the area is selected, use the Add Layer Mask option and mask out the area for 
future use.
4. 
Turn on the vegetation image and position/scale it over the appropriate location in the 
render (Fig. 32.3).
5. 
Activate the Layer Mask.

Go to Select 
F
Modify and choose Expand. Set the option to 2 pixels. This will allow a 
greater area of the vegetation image to remain, overlapping edges like paved or similar 
surfaces in the rendering.

Make the vegetation image active. Go to Select, click Inverse, and press Delete. What 
should remain is the lawn image filled in over the solid grass areas (Fig. 32.4).

Adjust and tweak the color, scale, and position of the vegetation. Dither the edges of the 
lawn where they overlap or extend over edges (delete or mask these edges). Try to make 
the grass edge look as natural as possible. This is the time-consuming part of the method.
9. 
You will need to match the inserted vegetation to the hue, contrast, and color of the 
rendering. There are several options. Use Levels, Hue Saturation, and Layer options. The 
Burn tool is useful in darkening the vegetation to match any shadows (Fig. 32.5).
