Organizing the Model
Organization is everything. Adding detailed components, particularly vegetation, can slow 
down SketchUp and your computer’s performance. By correctly organizing your model, you 
can help maintain optimum performance so you can construct detailed rich models with fewer 
headaches. Using layers and scenes is the key to organizing a model—and while not difficult, 
the technique is often overlooked (Fig. 11.10). Chapter 14 discusses model organization using 
layers and scenes to maximize computer performance.

Composition and Backdrop
Chapter 15 discusses composing your scenes and using backdrops, which are important when 
you’re creating the simulated reality of a rendering. Composition refers to the particular placement 
or arrangement of visual elements in a scene. Backdrops are 2D images that help fill in the gaps 
in your model and give it context (Fig. 11.11, Fig. 11.12).
advanced Detailing
Chapter 16 reviews concepts for adding another layer of detail to promote realism in rendering. 
It includes a review of various Ruby Scripts and modeling processes. This chapter is intended 
for users who are comfortable with SketchUp or want to understand how a model can be 
further refined.
