However, both types are suited for texturing. There are ways to hide or minimize the 
seams caused by irregular texture images. In addition, the regular and steady pattern of a 
seamless texture can be distracting: it might be seamless, but it can appear overly repetitive, 
creating what’s called a moiré pattern (Fig. 7.8). Typically, irregular textures allow for variation 
across the image surface (Fig. 7.9). Both types of textures have their uses and applications, as 
explored in Chapter 9.

CG Textures.com indicates which textures are seamless by labeling them with a star and the 
word “Tiled” next to their names (Fig. 7.10). CG Textures.com includes tools you can use to 
view tiled textures in perspective; just select 3D Tiling Preview.

Multiple Versions
When you’re looking for a specific texture, download multiple and different versions. Once you’ve 
started the draft iterative process, you’ll be swapping out textures as a common practice. A 
texture might not render well, be the wrong type, or be too small. By having multiple versions 
of materials, you’ll be prepared with several variations and be able to quickly swap for better 
results. 
CG Textures.com is a great resource because most of their textures have two, three, or more 
versions. In addition, these variations come in different sizes (Fig. 7.11).
