Draft render assessment
To assess HDRI lighting, run draft renders 
and make sure Shaderlight light is set for
Dynamic rendering: select Settings 
F
Update 
F
Auto. Run low-quality draft 
renders with low resolution and with 
model detail turned off. See Chapter 
20 for complete Draft settings and 
recommendations.
Once the render starts to process and 
display in the preview window, adjust the 
HDRI image type, position, and exposure. 
Any adjustments will cause the render to 
update and display the new settings. This is 
an effective way to assess the light settings.
The HDRI content image, the actual 
photo, can be set to display in the render-
ing using the options outlined in the next 
section.

Background and Backdrops
The Shaderlight Render settings include an option to insert backgrounds and backdrops. Three 
options are available under Background. Inserting custom backgrounds can be useful, but 
mastering the technique takes practice and the right image. If you’re new to rendering and 
Shaderlight, use the default setting of SketchUp Background to add background during 
postprocessing (see Part 7).
