Lightness/Darkness 
Lightness/Darkness affects the overall tone of a texture image. It can be useful in toning down 
vivid textures or lightening materials that appear dark.

Inverting
In Photoshop, select Image

Inverting a texture can create a whole new material appearance. Inverted materials take 
on a contrasting look, where dark becomes light and light becomes dark. Colors take on their 
opposite appearances. A good example is gray tiles: once inverted, the score joints are lighter 
while the overall surface is darker. The material looks more like tiles than concrete—i.e., a 
whole new material (Fig. 10.15, Fig. 10.16).

Correcting Blemishes and Patterns
The Clone Stamp can be found in the Photoshop toolbar; it looks like a rubber stamping 
device. The Clone Stamp can address two typical texture issues: removing blemishes and 
hiding seams.
Removing Blemishes
As described in Chapter 9, blemishes can be distracting but with the Clone Stamp they are easy 
to remove. Simply clone one location of the image and stamp it onto the blemish. Clone an area 
over the blemish that makes the blemished area fit with the overall material look (Fig. 10.17, 
Fig. 10.18, Fig. 10.19).
