Cost Benefit Analysis: Used to compare and contrast the expected outcomes of competing policy prescriptions
or projects over time. e.g. rival bids to build a new factory in a given area.
Surveys: Although local data is often available for variables such as unemployment, and employment the
researcher often requires more detailed knowledge of the local area and this has to be provided via local
surveys. This is particularly important in determining the specification of models and the magnitude of sector
inter-linkages e.g. expenditure patterns, location of suppliers and training penetration.
