Reflection essay
New atmosphere
“A man who has never gone to school may steal from a freight car,
but if he has a university education, he may steal the whole railroad.”
Theodore Roosevelt
Having studied for 2 semesters at Uzbek state World Languages University, I have grown up and learned more than I thought. I cannot say everything was new for me but I discovered the things more clearly which I knew before.
On this semester, we have had comparative methodology. It was interesting, since I found out that method is a key to successful lesson. Our teacher gave us very interesting tasks like microteaching and group work discussion. I have been able to develop rhetorical knowledge, develop critical thinking, reading, and information literacy, develop effective strategies for drafting texts, and develop knowledge of conventions. Moreover, using different approaches and methods, which can be useful for our future job. For example, the method of Total physical response is so interesting that a conductor of a lesson can gather all attention of all students, by this method, he can teach new words without any problems. Because Total Physical Response (TPR) is a method of teaching language or vocabulary concepts by using physical movement to react to verbal input. The process mimics the way that infants learn their first language, and it reduces student inhibitions and lowers stress. So by using this method the lesson will be much easier to teach students. Our teacher gave us tasks, which could improve our conducting a lesson. On these lessons, we have had the possibilities to use different methods, approaches or strategies, which were thought by our teacher. As I work at school simultaneously, in my lessons, I practiced these methods during my lessons, the whole language approach, the oral approach and etc. For example, The Silent Way is the name of a method of language teaching devised by Caleb Gattegno. In this method, the teacher should be silent as much as possible in the classroom but the learner should be encouraged to produce as much language as possible. I understood that how much we use this method, students try to use second language and to find translation of the words on their own. While organizing microteaching we were both teachers and students. It helped us to feel what is interesting and helpful for pupils and what is not.
Except the methods, we got information about learning strategies. If we can use these strategies in the right way, we will achieve high results. Attending the Comparative Methodology caused me to change my views about how to organize lesson from as a difficult thing to easy and interesting activity.
