That evening we arrived in Delhi, the great walled city of the Mogul Empire, scattered
with tombs and forts, many decayed or built over. Some scholars say that there are seven
cities on the sites of Old and New Delhi, while some say more. The history is rich and
stretches back centuries. At one time, Shah Jahan, the ruler who built the Taj Mahal,
reconstructed Old Delhi, restoring large bazars and streets leading to the fortress. As there
was no wall on the eastern side, where the River Yumuna flows; Delhi was sacked
regularly over the centuries, the last time being in the eighteenth century, when the Persian
ruler Nadir Shah looted treasures that included the Peacock Throne and the Koh -i -noor
diamond.
