In 1660 a new era began. The monarchy was restored when Charles II ascended to the throne. As he had no legitimate children, he was succeeded by his brother James II. James was a Catholic and therefore very unpopular. So in 1688 Parliament invited the Protestant Dutch noble William of Orange, who was married to James’ daughter Mary, to come over from Holland and depose the king. William defeated James and became William III of England. For the first time in history Parliament was more powerful than the monarch.
