Some people, called vegetarians, choose not to eat meat for a number of different reasons. Some do not like it, some think it's wrong to kill animals, some think it's too expensive or just unsafe.

People have been vegetarians all over the world for thousands of years, and in Britain the number has grown quite a lot recently. This is partly because some people have become ill and even died after eating unsafe food. Another reason is that many people do not like the way animals are farmed. Examples of this are battery chickens, or young cows kept in the dark so their meat stays light in colour. About 5% of people in Britain today do not eat red meat, and most people say they eat less meat now than in the past. If food is suitable for vegetarians, the packet often has the letter "V" on it.
