“Effective Strategies for Teaching and Learning about Africa:

A Workshop for K-12 Schools”
This workshop is designed to bring together public school teachers, librarians and educators to explore innovative ways of teaching and learning about Africa.
Objectives:

• 
  To familiarize participants with the vast pool of quality resources on Africa so that they are able to organize and synthesize diverse materials on the subject.
  
• 
  To enrich teaching and improve academic knowledge about the continent as well as provide the participants with the resources to meet institutional needs.
  

Benefits:

  A full-day conference, including keynote speaker and 8 workshops on variety of themes for different grade levels.
  
• 
  Full admittance to all ASA scholars’ events, Thursday through Sunday, plus feature films, large exhibit hall and African dance evening.
  
• 
  Participants will obtain CEU credits and in addition receive extensive handouts.
  

A ceremony to award the authors and illustrators of the best children’s books on Africa is a highlight of the program. The Children’s Africana Book Award was established in 1991 by the African Studies Association Outreach Council to encourage the writing, publication and use of accurate, balanced children’s materials on Africa.

The ASA Outreach Council organizes a Teachers’ Workshop each year in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the National Association of African Studies.
