Pinocchio: Buy my school-book, there are alot of pictures in it.
Boy: Oh, yes, there are a lot of pictures. Fine. (The boy gave the money.)
(Pinocchio sat down on a bench. Two actors opened the curtains. A performance began. The puppets danced – Harlequin and others. Pinocchio liked it very much and laughed all the time.)
Harlequin: Is that Pinocchio?
All the puppets (together): It’s Pinocchio! It’s Pinocchio! It’s our brother Pinocchio!
(At tht moment the showman came in. He wqs a very big man. His beard was as black as ink. He had a big whip in his hand. The puppets were very frightened.)
Showman: What is all the noise?
Pinocchio: Please, please, sir! I am sorry. It wasn’t me...
Showman: Stop talking! We’ll talk to you after the show. (To the soldiers) bring that puppet into the kitchen. I’ll put him on the fire and make a good dinner.
Pinocchio (crying): I don’t want to burn. I don’t want to burn in the fire!
Showman: Don’t cry! Where are your papa and mamma?
Pinocchio: Papa is at home; but I have no Mamma.
Showman: You poor little thing. you poor little thing! But I have no wood, I can’t make my dinner. What shall I do? I’ll burn one of the puppets of my theatre. Come here, soldiers. (Pinocchio started crying.) Stop crying! What do you want now?
Pinocchio: Don’t burn the puppets, dear sir!
Showman: But I want to make my dinner.
Pinocchio (crying): Then throw me on the fire!
(All the puppets heard Pinocchio’s words and began to cry.)
Showman: (At first the showman said nothing. Then he said to Pinocchio) You are a good boy! Come here!
Pinocchio: (He ran up to the showman and kissed him.) Thank you, thank you very much!
(All puppets began to dance.)
Showman: What’s your father’s name?
Pinocchio: Geppetto.
Showman: Has he much money?
