Degree Programs at the University
From the academic year 2002/2003, the University of Tartu is applying a new 3+2 study system that embraces a three-year bachelor's program and a two -year master's program. The bachlor's and master's programs are conducted on the basis of curricula which entail five years of nominal study.
Bachelor level degree (Bakalaureus): A student accepted into a bachelor level program (faculty) is eligible to receive a bachelor level degree upon the successful completion of 120 Estonian credits, and a final examination and a diploma thesis.
Bachelor level program curricula entail modules that are sets of subjects. Bachelor's stage comprises two base modules, two narrow field modules, two speciality modules, elective subject modules, optional subjects and bachelor's examination or bachelor's thesis. Base modules are compulsory. From the two field modules, one has to be taken from the major field, the other can be chosen from different curricula. The narrow field modules and and the specialty modules are established so that the a student would have an opportunity to complement his/her major subject with narrow field and speciality modules external to the curriculum. Faculties vary in their approach to the prerequisite courses for master's program, in some the sequence is more strictly defined than others. (N.B. Check with your faculty or department chair for specific information regarding your degree program.)

Master level degree (Magister): A student accepted into a master level program is eligible to receive a Master level degree after the successful completion of approximately 80 Estonian credits, including the completion, defence and acceptance of a master's thesis. The completion of the master level program takes two years (four semesters). Upon acceptance to a master level program, students are required to submit a plan of study to their faculty, which will be reviewed by a faculty committee.
Upon change of curriculum on transfer from the bachelor's stage to the master's stage prerequisite subjects in an extent of up to 44 Estonian credits may be defined.
* The curricula of medicine, dentistry and pharmacy have one stage and the education obtained by these curricula corresponds to the master's level.
