► To my mind, people love having pets because they
enrich people's life bringing structure and purpose
into it, reducing the level of stress and enhancing the
mood. Moreover, pets satisfy people's need to take
care of somebody at the same time giving people
unconditional love and faith. Pets can also expose
people to new hobbies and activities, for example,
taking care of stray animals, and help people keep
active and fit while enjoying the attachment and fun
which pets bring into their life.

Now does population growth influence wildlife?
First of all, population growth is the principal cause
of wildlife decline. According to some scientists,
wildlife populations have fallen by more than
two-thirds in less than 50 years. And as far as I
know, wildlife numbers are still decreasing at an
unprecedented rate. Also, human population growth
is driving many wildlife species to extinction. As
the population grows, more land and resources are
needed to provide food, housing and jobs. Oceans
are overfished. Development stretches farther and
farther away from urban areas. Forests, swamps,
plains, lakes and other habitats disappear as they are
cleared to make way for agriculture, housing, roads,
pipelines and the other landmarks of industrial
development. To sum up, population growth is a
key cause of habitat destruction and fragmentation
which result in wildlife decline and extinction
of wildlife species.

What role can zoos play in education?
Well, to my mind, zoos have already become power-
ful educational tools for their visitors as they en-
hance the public's understanding of wildlife and the
need to conserve the places animals live in. Present-
day zoos do not only provide a safe environment
for animals. One more important thing they do is
contribute to human education and knowledge. For
example, they give people an opportunity to examine
the relationship between humans and animals or,
in other words, help people understand how human
life is linked to that of animals. Also, they create a
connection between people and nature, and this way
change people's attitudes towards nature for the
better. Well, and of course, zoos let people learn a
lot about certain animals that might be hard to find
locally, making it possible for people to distinguish
these animals from their immediate relatives.
