Take advantage of every opportunity offered by your school. Within the hotel and restaurant
management program, there are likely to be a variety of clubs available to students. I would
highly recommend joining one of them to gain the experience and networking that comes with it.
Find a club that suits you the best and join it. If there are two that you like, join both of them!
Clubs offer a great opportunity to become more involved in what you are studying, and you will
gain a better idea about what to expect in careers.
Also, be sure to work in the industry (specifically front desk), if you want to become an FOM.
Hands-on experience will be the best test of whether this is really the career you want, and you
will gain valuable skills and industry knowledge. Internships may be available with different
hospitality companies. Complete at least one internship before graduating, even it is not a formal
requirement. It will allow you to gain exposure to different departments throughout a hotel, and
you can learn how they all work together. As an intern, you will be involved in activities such as
meetings, training, and other activities that are part of a hotel manager’s workday.
