Section Objective:
Describe the most common structures of hotel affiliation, own-
ership, and operation.
Section Summary:
A specific hotel property may (or may not) be affiliated with a
franchise. If it is, it may be owned by an independent, a franchisor, a REIT, or a joint
venture. If it is not franchised, the property is typically owned by an independent.
Franchised properties can be operated by an independent, a franchisor, or a man-
agement company. Nonfranchised properties are operated by an independent or a
management company.
