Abstract. 
The article considers the formation of compensatory competence in engineering students within the compe-
tence approach, which is a combination of personality-oriented, cultural and interactive approaches. In the article 
the author reveals the meaning of the concept of "compensatory competence", emphasizes that the development of 
compensatory competence allows the student of engineering ZVO first of all to fill the gaps in existing knowledge; 
to compensate them in language means; ensures the inclusion of cognitive processes in the process of learning a 
foreign language; communicate at the receptive and productive levels, despite the lack of foreign language and 
the presence of unfamiliar elements in texts for listening and reading; replenish the terminological vocabulary of 
the specialty. It is emphasized that the process of formation of compensatory competence is progressive and in-
volves the mastery of certain compensatory skills at the receptive and reproductive levels of their subsequent 
integrated application at the productive level. 
The article defines the components of teaching methods aimed at the formation of compensatory competence, 
determines the criteria of exercises created for the formation and development of compensatory competence and 
carried out on the basis of studying the requirements of the standard and leading foreign language programs for 
engineering specialties. all components of compensatory competence of students. 
It is concluded that the proposed teaching method, aimed at forming the compensatory competence of engi-
neering students should be used both in special elective classes in a foreign language and used in the main learning 
process. However, some exercises can be conducted both in the classroom and in the form of independent work.
