Review the 
Theme
skill with students. Say: 
Sometimes authors have characters learn what they 
want the reader to learn. As you read, think about what the narrator learns. 
Build background by 
explaining that a zip line is attached to two poles or trees. Riders hang from the zip line to fly above 
the ground or see things that are up high. Then remind students of the 
Visualization 
strategy. Say: 
If 
you have difficulty visualizing, review the details you have read, then close your eyes. This will 
help you construct an image in your mind.
Have students read the passage. When students have 
finished reading the passage, direct them to complete the skill and strategy practice activities. 
Review the answers together.
DAY
5
Tell students they will practice both the 
Character and Setting 
and 
Theme
skills as they read a folk 
tale. Then remind students of the 
Monitor Comprehension 
strategy. Say: 
Themes are often only fully 
understood at the end of a passage. Look for how the character changes from the beginning to 
the end of the folk tale to help you find the theme. 
When students have finished reading, direct 
them to complete the skill and strategy practice activities. Review the answers together.
