Microturbine Economics Example
The figure demonstrates an end user’s peak demand of 92 kW reduced to 46 kW (peak
load shaving) with the installation of a microturbine. Using data applicable to this end
user, power supply company (Boston Edison) data, and electricity prices current at that
time, it can be noted that the customer’s purchased power costs drop from $43,300
annually to $14,700, a numerical savings of $28,600.

Power Speed operating Region of Microturbine
The power and speed operating regions are constrained by three variables, as indicated
in figure. A minimum dc-link voltage is required for maintaining a linear pulse width
modulation. Therefore, such a constraint imposes a minimum shaft speed. Maximum
power is determined by the fuel injection rate to the combustors, limiting the maximum
power over the operating range. Bearings, vibrations, and overall mechanical design
constraints will limit the maximum speed on the right side of the power–speed
envelope of Figure.
