6. Conclusions

Understanding the physicochemical behavior of polymeric NPs is the subject of numerous

researches, however one of the main di

fficulties encountered in their characterization is their nano size.

The physicochemical characterization of these drug carriers is only feasible through the combination of

several analytical techniques. One of the biggest challenges, which still persists, is the elucidation of

drug association mechanisms to polymeric NPs. Several advances have been already achieved, both in

the accumulation of information related to the physicochemical phenomena involved and in relation

to the development of more stable polymeric NP formulations, which can broaden the prospects

for clinical use of these systems. The study of nanoparticles and nanoecotoxicology is necessary to

continue the development of e

fficient nanocarriers, showing no risk for the environment or human

health in their potential applications. Particularly with chemical metrology in mind, it will be possible

to obtain quantitative and qualitative measurements that help to establish methods, principles, and

procedures that guarantee results with analytical quality.
