Psyllium
Psyllium mucilage is obtained from the seed coat of
Plantago ovata by milling the outer layer of the
seeds. It has been evaluated for its tablet binding
properties,

but also to form hydrogels through
radiation-induced cross-linking for controlled release
of 5-fluorouracil as a model drug.
80
Psyllium and methacrylamide based hydrogels were
prepared by using N,N’-methylenebisacrylamide as a
cross-linker, which were then loaded with insulin.
These cross-linked hydrogels showed controlled
release of the active ingredient by means of non-
Fickian diffusion of the drug through polymer chain
relaxation during swelling.
81
Psyllium husk was used
in combination with other excipients such as
hydroxypropyl methylcellulose to prepare a novel
sustained
release,
swellable
and
bioadhesive
gastroretentive drug delivery systems for ofloxacin.
