Description of the Study 
The author’s (2010) study is a CALL effectiveness study which compared two EFL college 
writing classes’ writing performance, metalinguistic performance, affective development 
and student perceptions in Taiwan. Two writing classes of t
he researcher’s at a national 
university of science and technology in northern Taiwan participated in the study. 
Randomly selected, twenty-six students participated in a non-blog English writing class 
and eighteen students in a blog-integrated English writing class.
Each class contained mixed levels of students that can be roughly categorized into two 
proficiency levels, intermediate and high-intermediate. All the students are ethnic 
Chinese and non-English majors. Their average ages were between 19 and 21, and most 
of them are male. 
The study combined various data collection methods including students’ pre
-and post-
tests, learning journals, writing samples, responses to questionnaires as well as 
observation of their learning behaviors for data analysis (see Table 1).
