Micro
As mentioned before, the micro analysis is only devoted to those scenes which the
researcher has selected previously from the macro analysis.
The micro level of analysis
has two stages. Figure 2 illustrates the first stage. As can be seen, it corresponds to a
general description of the scene. This description includes a
snapshot of the scene and a
second column devoted to a description of the scene where the activity is taking place, the
nature of the activity and the participants who are involved in the event with the
abbreviations used for each participant.
SCENE 01 (0:00:00 - 0:26:03 )
DESCRIPTION
-
Scene description: participants are outside the
hotel, around the fire.
-
Pedagogical description: T is greeting the students,
checking that everyone is there and that
everybody is ready to start the class. T tries to get
students into a circle to start the class.
-
Participants: teacher (T), Maia Bergere (MaBe),
Meri Barangaham (MeBa), Kitus Beyza (KiBe),
Ruth Dorben (RuDo), Tony Spire (ToSp), Timay
Trill (TiTr), Jordi Dash (JoDa), Elsa McBain (ElMc),
Laia Adagio (LaAd), Silvie Helse (SiHe), Ariadna
Chiantelle (ArCh)
Figure 2. Provides information of the whole scene
It is in this micro stage where the multi-layered transcript is used.
To account for the
multimodal nature of this world, alongside the video recording of the class session, three
transcripts have been created to transcribe the communication that occurs in the different
communication modes as well as the interface. The first transcript records the
communication that occurs
through the audible mode, the second transcript records the
textual mode and the third transcript accounts for the visual mode: the avatars' non-
verbal behavior as well as the user's interface activity to manage the program (e.g. how
the user manages the windows in the program,
inventory management, etc.). Figure 3
illustrates how a communication strategy carries across different modes.

Fig 3. Screenshot of the micro layer from the 3M Transcription
Apart from the multi-layered transcript, when a communication strategy occurs across
different modes, the turns are linked with each other. Thus,
when a communication
strategy is queried, the researcher can see what modes come into play with each
communication strategy.
