Another issue of etiquette is to have your camera on during the 
call. You would not go into a face-to-face session with your face 
hidden. It is just good manners to make yourself visible to others. 
Tere is also another reason for this request in university video 
etiquette rules. Tis is so that the lecturer can see that you are 
actually attending. Some sessions in some universities will be 
compulsory. In medical schools, for instance, all classes are com-
pulsory. If you are an international student who is engaged in 
hybrid learning, there may be visa requirements surrounding the 
level of your attendance. So, in many instances, the lecturer needs 
to know that you are present. However, I have known students log 
into a video call but not actually be present. Tey use one machine 
to log in, and then because their camera is of, they can go into 
another room, switch to playing a game, or even go back to bed. It 
would appear they are there, but they are not present. To ensure 
that everyone is present, etiquette rules will ask you to keep your 
camera switched on. 
I completed a small survey of students who repeatedly switched 
of their cameras during video calls to fnd out why they were do-
ing this. I was given several reasons such as “I haven’t brushed my 
hair, and I look a mess” or “I’m still in bed”. If you are not prepared 
for the video call, or you are worried about your appearance, then 
you need better time management to get yourself ready on time 
for the online session. Students would not turn up to a face-to-
face session on campus without ensuring they were adequately 
dressed and looked presentable. So, why should it be any diferent 
for online sessions?
