O ther people g ra d u a lly s tarted a rriv in g , the seats fille d up, and we w aited expectantly fo r the 
players. W hen the m atch s tarted , it soon becam e c le a r th a t I w as p ra c tic a lly the only person 
su p p o rtin g Jean M artin . Most people w e re th e re to su p p o rt the o th e r guy w ho had won the 
previous tw o years and was the favo urite to w in th is year, too. Every tim e P aul Fernandez won 
a point, the crow d eru pted into applause but I sat silently, ge tting m ore and m ore anxious. 
M a rtin lost the firs t set, but the n th e re was a d ra m a tic tu rn a ro u n d . He suddenly seem ed to find 
som e s e lf-b e lie f and he s tarted to w in. That's w h a t I love about te n n is - it's a b a ttle of the m ind 
as m uch as th e body. I find it in te restin g to see how som e players m ay be high ly s k ille d but 
d o n 't have the m e n ta l s tre n g th to w in. M a rtin obviously did have th is stre n g th , and Fernandez 
w as slo w ly fa llin g ap art. The a tm osp he re w as e le ctric. M a rtin showed off his am azing s k ills , 
h ittin g b a ll a fte r b a ll s tra ig h t down th e line. M a rtin served fo r the m atch - you could have 
heard a pin drop. W hen he served an ace, th e crow d w e n t w ild ! A ltho ug h they had begun by 
s u p p o rtin g his opponent, they had grow n to respect him fo r his cool head and c o n tro l of the 
ball. W hen he w as presented w ith the trophy, he crie d w ith joy.
