Sonia Sales Mendoza 
resides in Quezon City, Metro Manila, the Philippines. Sonia was a founding 
member of the Mother Earth Foundation and is now its Chairman. She was the first NGO 
Commissioner to the National Solid Waste Management Commission (2001 to 2005). She serves 
as a resource person on ecological waste management and advocate for Environmental Health and 
Justice, and was one of three Zero Waste Fellows in the first Berkeley Ecology Center Zero Waste 
Fellowship in Berkeley, California. She coordinates with local government officials (governors, mayors 
and 
barangay
captains) for their zero waste programmes. Sonia campaigns actively with the Global 
Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) and the Ecowaste Coalition for Environmental Health 
and Justice, and dreams of the conservation of biodiversity and a sustainable environment for the 
Philippines.
Peter W. Newton
is Professor of Urban and Regional Development at Swinburne University of 
Technology in Melbourne. Prior to 2007 he was Chief Research Scientist at the Commonwealth 
Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), where he held several key leadership 
roles, including Chief Scientist, Deputy Chief and Science Director (Sustainable Built Environment 
Technologies). He is author of the 2006 
Australia State of Environment Report: Human Settlements
.
Fabia Pryor
holds a combined Bachelor of Arts/Sciences degree from the Australian National 
University. She has studied development studies, international relations, geography and sustainability 
studies and has combined this breadth of interest into a particular focus on sustainable textiles. As 
an honours pathway project she undertook an independent research project investigating the role of 
sustainable textiles as a driver of whole system change, particularly focusing on ‘developing’ countries.
Fabia intends to pursue postgraduate studies in this area, in preparation for which she is travelling 
to South America to undertake further research.
