1. C. S. Lewis ( 1 8 9 8 - 1 9 6 3 ) , professor of medieval and Renaissance English at Cambridge 
University, was also a novelist, a writer of children's books, and a popular speaker on moral 
and religious issues. In his best-known book, The Screwtape Letters ( 1 9 4 4 ) , he imperson-
ated a veteran devil in Hell that writes letters encouraging the efforts of a novice devil hard 
at work on Earth. "The Inner Ring" was the Memorial Lecture at King's College, University 
of London, delivered to the students in 1 9 4 4 .
