IELTS Reading is challenging because of a lack of visual focus. Keep your eyes and 
attention on the meaning of the question and the passage. 
You need to do three types of reading:
IELTS READING
Critical Tips and Time Management
1. Speed Reading (200km/h)
Speed read the passage from beginning to end at the equivalent of 200km per 
hour. Notice what the passage is about. Notice what each paragraph is about.
Notice key words.
2. Search Reading (60km/h)
Search reading is when you ‘look for’ a word mentioned in the question that will 
be the same word, a synonym or a paraphrase in the passage. Usually, you’ll 
locate a particular sentence in a paragraph. You should search read at about 
60km per hour.
3. Careful Reading (20km/h)
After you have located the particular part of the paragraph you need to read to 
find the answer SLOW DOWN to the equivalent of 20km per hour. Read carefully. 
Read it all. Understand it. 
Then, return to the question and try to answer it. 
Of course, you will probably go back and forth and back and forth because your 
memory isn’t great (no one’s is!). But try to minimise the number of times you re-
read because it will waste time.
