Study, analysis and implementation of NB-IoT based communication 
Narrow-band IoT (NB-IoT) is a radio communication technology designed to work on 
very limited bandwidth. NB-IoT falls in the bracket of Low Power Wide Area Network 
(LPWAN) wireless telecommunication technologies. The motivation behind LPWAN 
technologies is improving feasibility of IoT use-cases where energy and bandwidth-constrained 
nodes require to transceive data over long distances at low transmission frequency. NB-IoT is 
also a technology for future and has been included in 5G mobile standards by 3GPP [11].
Considering the potential of cellular IoT technologies such as NB-IoT, many embedded 
board manufacturers have started sporting on-board NB-IoT modems with API support, which 
can be driven by AT Commands via dedicated serial interfaces. The board I eventually worked 
on for the thesis - SARA AFF R410M by SODAQ – also hosts an NB-IoT modem from uBlox 
and API from SODAQ. One of the primary motivations of the thesis to enable LWM2M device 
management over NB-IoT.
Hence, as an objective of this thesis, ‘study, analysis and implementation of NB-IoT 
based communication’ has been identified.

Integration of IPSO, LWM2M, CoAP, DTLS, AT Commands Driver 
into a protocol stack 
Based on the problem under consideration, the complete protocol stack is a layered 
architecture comprising of IPSO, LWM2M, CoAP, DTLS (to provide secure connection), 
UDP/IP over NB-IoT as shown in Figure 1.5.4.1.
As of now, the developers building a LWM2M client for a microcontroller board will 
have to have expert domain knowledge of each layer. The development process requires 
stitching together each layer and hence is very time consuming.
