Chapter 10: Editing Textures in an External Photo Editor
Fig. 10.8:
Unaltered textures in SketchUp (top) are then rendered (Shaderlight).

Part 2: Textures
Fig. 10.9:
The same textures from Fig. 10.8 are adjusted in a photo-editing program and
given greater contrast. The top image shows the edited textures in SketchUp. The bottom
image shows the textures rendered in Shaderlight with greater depth due to the adjustments.

Chapter 10: Editing Textures in an External Photo Editor
Fig. 10.10:
The original texture (left) has its levels adjusted (middle) and then slightly desaturated (right).
Decreasing the contrast can help soften a texture, giving it a more uniform look without
drawing attention to any single aspect of the material (Fig. 10.11, Fig. 10.12). This might be
useful on textures like paint, brushed metals, kitchen counters, asphalt, and other materials
with more uniform and faded surface character.
Fig. 10.11:
The Asphalt texture has too
much contrast (top). It is adjusted in a
photo-editing program and given less
contrast (bottom).

Hue/Saturation.
Using Hue/Saturation is an excellent way to create a variety of textures from the same
material, each displayed in a different color and tone (Fig. 10.13, Fig. 10.14).
Changing Color
Adjusting the hue/saturation allows you to completely change the base color of a texture. Black
granite can be changed to light yellow countertop; red paving can be adjusted to a light gray-
blue. The variations are endless.
Desaturating
A common initial result when draft rendering is the oversaturated appearance of some
materials. Colors can appear overly bright or rich. These values can detract from a rendering.
Hue/Saturation allows you to tone down a color’s vibrancy. Slightly desaturating colors helps
moderate the vivid nature of colors in renderings.
