we read slowly and pay attention to what we read, it is easier for us to find the clues in a passage 
that help us make inferences. Read the instructions at the top of the page aloud. Then have students 
read the passage. When students have finished, direct them to complete the skill practice activity. 
For the strategy practice activity, pair students or complete it as a group.

the instructions at the top of the page aloud. Remind students of the

strategy. Have 
them brainstorm questions about the similarities and differences between goats and sheep. Record 
questions on the board, and tell students to choose one to write in the space provided for the strategy 
practice activity. Have students read the passage. When students have finished, invite volunteers to 
share their question and discuss how it helped them set a purpose for reading. Then direct students 
to complete the skill practice activity. Review the answers together.
Compare and Contrast
Students look for similarities and differences between two or more people or things.
Make Inferences
Students look for clues in the passage and draw upon their own experience 
to understand information that is not directly stated.
