Introduce the strategy to students: This week we will learn how to monitor our comprehension. 
When good readers read, they keep track of how well they understand what they are reading. 
Explain that by monitoring comprehension, students can recognize when they stop understanding 
something. Read the instructions at the top of the page aloud. Ask: Why do we read a table of 
contents? (to find things in a book; to understand what a book is about; etc.) Direct students to read 
the table of contents and to complete the strategy practice activity. Invite volunteers to share their 
responses. Then direct students to complete the skill practice activity. Review the answers together.
