Remind students of the common reasons why authors write: to entertain, to inform, to persuade, or 
to teach how to do something. Say: By understanding the author’s purpose, we can better set our 
own purpose for reading. Also remind students of the 
Ask Questions
strategy, which was taught 
during Week 5. Say: Asking questions after we read is a good way to figure out if we understood 
what we read. Read the instructions at the top of the page aloud. Then have students read the 
passage. When students have finished, direct them to complete the skill practice activity. Review the 
answers together. For the strategy practice activity, invite volunteers to share their questions, and 
allow the group to brainstorm ideas for finding the answers.
